Carl Munters (1897-1989), was a successful Swedish inventor and entrepreneur. The technology on which the company’s products and services are based is the result of his extensive research in basic principles of heat and humidity transfer. The initial operation was conducted at a laboratory in Carl Munters’ home in Stockholm, where he worked with a small group of fellow researchers.

Carl Munters initial idea was to develop an air-conditioning system based on the use of evaporative cooling and dehumidification. The development of the key components of the system were the desiccant wheel and the evaporative pads. Shortly after Carl Munters retired from active management in the early 1970s, Munters was acquired by the Incentive Group. During the 1970s, the expansion was continued into new markets through subsidiaries and licensees. The company changed its strategy at the end of the 1970s as some of the patents began to expire. The range of products and applications was gradually extended and the distribution was expanded to the global community.

Cargocaire Division derived its name from early marine applications. In 1939, Oliver Colvin, USN, founded Cargocaire to provide a solution to the deterioration of cargo during transatlantic voyages. In the late 1950’s, Colvin and Carl Munters began a joint research and development effort that produced the HoneyCombe® rotor, the heart of Munters dessicant dehumidifiers. Cargocaire became a part of Munters Corporation in 1978.

SAN ANTONIO, April 4, 2007: Munters acquired US-based Des Champs Technologies. The company holds a technology-leading position in energy-efficient air treatment solutions, complementing Munters' Commercial Dehumidification product range. Des Champs employs approximately 200 people.

Located in Buena Vista, Virginia, USA, Des Champs manufactures custom make up air conditioning equipment for commercial buildings. Des Champs' expertise is in commercial and industrial heat exchangers, dehumidification and indirect evaporative cooling.

With this acquisition, Munters dramatically strengthens its position as a leading supplier of energy-efficient climate control solutions for commercial buildings. "Des Champs provides an exceptional fit with our Commercial Dehumidification Division," says Mike McDonald, President of Munters Dehumidification Division. "This expansion aligns with our strategy as an innovation leader in energy-efficient indoor air quality solutions for our customers. It enhances our expertise in energy recovery and indirect evaporative cooling, where Des Champs holds a technology-leading position.

Des Champs Technologies offers a full range of world-class technologies for energy-efficient packaged systems, offering optimal, often unique solutions to meet customers' needs.
